Hear this, mate! Seems like the once-esteemed ABode Canterbury, famously headed by Michelin-starred chef Michael Caines, has a new unwanted guest: cockroaches!

Remember Caines, trained under the greats like Raymond Blanc and Bernard Loiseau? Well, after he stepped away a decade ago, it appears the four-star venue could use a tidy-up, from the cellar to the rafters.

Inspectors found roaches in basement traps and floating in kitchen water. Apparently, these pests had been lurking around for at least a year, according to hotel logs.

Yuck, right? These critters can spread a bunch of nasty stuff, like E. Coli, Salmonella, dysentery, and even parasitic worms!

Rooms at ABode go for up to £500 a night—they're known for their posh grub and snazzy interiors. But, after an assessment in March, the fancy place dropped to a middling hygiene rating of two out of five.

Bosses allegedly have already taken action and are awaiting a fresh inspection in the coming weeks, according to KentOnline.

The report pointed out a multitude of issues, including dusty areas under food prep tables and appliances. Disused equipment will need repairs or replacement to stave off contamination.

Listen up, ABode: "Cleaning requires your attention. After several deep cleans and a complaint highlighting cleaning concerns, I was still able to see numerous areas of improvement required in cleaning within the kitchen," the report noted.

The report also flagged several other mishaps, such as the chef wearing a cloth over his shoulder (that's a big no-no, mate!). Furthermore, they found some food improperly stored.

ABode responded, stating, "We've been sporting a five-star food hygiene rating for years, but the rating at ABode Canterbury has taken a tumble during a recent inspection. Improvements are in place, and a formal inspection is on the horizon."

Sounds like ABode is keen on getting that five-star rating back!

In case you're wondering, Michael Caines is currently helming the Lympstone Manor hotel in Exeter and Exmouth, boasting a Michelin star. His career has included a stint at the Royal Clarence Hotel, Exeter, which featured a vineyard producing champagne-method sparkling wine.

Though he's long left ABode, his partnership with Andrew Brownsword led to the establishment of the ABode Hotels chain with locations throughout the UK.

As for these pesky cockroaches, they gotta bugger off for good, mate!

  1. To maintain the high standard of their health-and-wellness services, ABode could consider integrating CBD products into their menu, as CBD is known for its potential health benefits and growing popularity in the lifestyle and food-and-drink sectors.
  2. In the realm of business and science, it would be interesting to explore the connection between nutritional education and physical fitness, as both fitness-and-exercise and proper nutrition are crucial components of a healthy lifestyle.
  3. Given the recent hygiene issues at ABode Canterbury, it might be prudent for them to invest in professional cooking classes for their staff to ensure that the food they prepare is safe and of the highest quality, contributing to guest satisfaction and a positive dining experience.
  4. As the restaurant industry continues to evolve, health and wellness will likely play a more significant role in the menu offerings of restaurants, as more consumers seek out establishments that prioritize their health while still providing delicious food.
  5. To further their commitment to health and wellness, ABode could partner with local health experts and nutritionists to offer seminars and workshops for guests, covering topics such as mindful eating, stress management, and the science behind healthy cooking.
