Leipzig Zoo Euthanizes Three Amur Tiger Cubs

In a heartbreaking turn of events, the Leipzig Zoo has euthanized three Amur tiger cubs just days after their birth. The mother tiger, named Yushka, was unable to care for her offspring, leading to their rapid decline in health.

Yushka, being a first-time mother, abandoned her cubs within hours after birth. The cubs grew weak and showed no active behavior due to lack of nursing and care. Hand-rearing was rejected as it is not appropriate for wild Amur tigers.

The zoo's veterinarian, Andreas Bernhard, explained that the cubs had to be euthanized to spare them the suffering of starvation. The decision was made after the cubs showed no signs of improvement and were no longer stimulating the mother to provide care or produce milk.

The zoo intends to continue breeding the Amur tiger with Yushka, hoping that she will contribute to species survival in the future with more experience as a mother. The decision drew criticism from animal rights activists who questioned euthanasia and captive breeding practices, but the zoo defended its actions as necessary and responsible under the circumstances.

The cubs were born on Wednesday evening. This was the first litter for tiger named Yushka. The zoo will implement measures to prevent similar incidents with future litters and ensure the proper care of the cubs.

Zoo director Jörg Junhold stated that this behavior is a common occurrence in the animal kingdom. He emphasized that the zoo will continue to prioritize the welfare of its animals while working towards conservation efforts for the endangered Amur tiger species.

The Leipzig Zoo plans to continue breeding with the Amur tiger named Yushka in the future, despite the recent incident with her cubs. The zoo will strive to ensure the well-being of any future cubs born to Yushka.
