Last month, notable social media giant and self-proclaimed FOMO creator, Facebook, shared an infographic showcasing America's fittest cities based on user data. With Virginia Beach, Virginia, leading the pack, followed by Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Austin, Texas, the results were hardly surprising. However, Facebook's rankings differed drastically from the 2013 American College of Sports Medicine's (ACSM)'s American Fitness Index (AFI) top 10 cities list.

Despite Portland, Oregon, making both lists' top 10, Facebook's eighth-place Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, barely managed a 50th place standing on the ACSM list. But why this vast discrepancy between the two lists?

Understanding the Differences

From January 1st to March 1st of 2013, Facebook analyzed U.S. cities with at least 200,000 Facebook users, merging data on fitness check-ins, mentions, and use of Facebook apps to construct its top 10 list. The report's visual representation included popular cities for specific activities like dance (Oakland, California) and CrossFit (El Paso, Texas).

On the other hand, the ACSM's index builds on survey data, disease prevalence statistics, census information, and environmental and community indicators, including parks department expenditures, obesity trends, and the number of baseball diamonds per capita. Incorporating self-reported data such as the percentage of smokers in a given city, the ACSM's ratings aim to offer a total assessment of a city's fitness capabilities.

The Validity of Each Ranking

Very few can deny Facebook's desire to establish itself as a one-stop destination for fitness tracking enthusiasts. The infographic alerts users to Facebook's new Get Fit Guide, and the company has made sharing fitness-related milestones like "Lost weight" or "Started running" exceedingly convenient.

Although Facebook's fitness-related data might not be the most comprehensive or scientifically sound, it contains nuggets of valuable info on what involves users engaging in fitness pursuits across the U.S.

However, comparing the two rankings could be beneficial in determining if a city's residents are maximizing available resources. Minneapolis, America's top biking city, according to Facebook, also boasts impressive bike lane access and biking-friendly amenities, as noted by the ACSM. Meanwhile, San Diego is considered the nation's premier marathon city, both in Facebook's rankings and the ACSM index' perspectives. Unfortunately, understanding whether these correlations are coincidental or more deeply entwined remains challenging.

In Conclusion

Regardless of their individual merits, both rankings demonstrate the immense potential for social data in monitoring health and fitness trends. Civic planners and government officials alike can capitalize on this information to target fitness projects with maximum impact on the U.S.'s cities.
