In a recent study conducted by Rutgers University, researchers found that daily personal care routines can expose individuals to over a hundred potentially hazardous chemicals, leading to a range of health risks.

The study, which analyzed nearly 9,350 personal care products used by 593 participants, revealed that the average person uses 14.5 products daily, ranging from soap and toothpaste to cosmetics, fragrances, and hair styling products. These daily uses, according to the researchers, expose consumers to potential health hazards across 17 categories, including cancer risk, developmental toxicity, allergies, and endocrine disruption.

Particularly concerning were perfumes and colognes, hair products, and skin care products, which were identified as the most hazardous products due to their endocrine-disrupting chemicals. Notably, phthalates, a common ingredient in perfumes and colognes, were singled out for their negative effects.

Despite these findings, the study also offered some good news. By making better choices, individuals could significantly reduce their chemical exposure levels in a matter of days. The researchers recommended using fewer products, swapping out harmful products with cleaner alternatives, and utilizing resources like the Skin Deep app to make safer choices.
