Synthesis of Enzyme 6-Phytase (EC 3.1.3.26)
In a significant development for the animal feed industry, the European Union Reference Laboratory (EURL) has recommended the use of EN ISO 30024 as the standard method for determining phytase activity in feed additives, premixtures, and compound feed. This internationally recognized method is crucial for ensuring consistent feed quality and regulatory compliance.
EN ISO 30024 (2009), titled "Animal feeding stuffs — Determination of phytase activity," provides a standardized procedure to accurately measure the enzymatic activity of phytase. Phytase is an essential enzyme used in animal nutrition to improve phosphate availability and reduce environmental phosphate pollution.
The method is widely adopted by national standards bodies, such as the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), demonstrating its global acceptance and relevance.
In the context of this announcement, the application seeks authorization for ROVABIO® PHYPLUS under Article 4(1) for use in laying hens and minor laying poultry species. This 6-phytase preparation, obtained from a fermentation broth of Trichoderma reesei CBS 148412, will be available in both solid and liquid formulations.
The liquid formulation guarantees a minimum 6-phytase activity of 5000 FTU/g, while the solid formulation offers a guaranteed minimum of 20000 FTU/g. Both formulations are intended to be included in compound feed to obtain a minimum activity of 300 FTU/kg compound feed.
The EURL has recognized the equivalence of the internal single-laboratory validated method proposed by the Applicant and the EN ISO 30024 method for the determination of the phytase activity in ROVABIO® PHYPLUS. This recognition underscores the accuracy and reliability of the method in measuring the phytase activity in the product.
The EURL further recommends the ring-trial validated EN ISO 30024 standard method for the quantification of the 6-phytase activity in the feed additive, premixtures, and compound feed. This recommendation emphasizes the importance of standardization in ensuring consistent results across different laboratories and feed products.
In conclusion, the adoption of EN ISO 30024 as the standard method for determining phytase activity in animal feed is a significant step towards ensuring consistent feed quality and regulatory compliance. The authorization of ROVABIO® PHYPLUS under Article 4(1) for use in laying hens and minor laying poultry species further underscores the importance of phytase in animal nutrition and the need for standardized methods to measure its activity accurately.
