Swiss Hospitals Prepare for Post-Daylight Saving Time Surge in Emergency Cases

Swiss hospitals brace for increased emergency cases following the daylight saving time change. The shift to winter time sees a 3.5 percent surge in patients, while summer time brings a 6.5 percent spike.

On average, over 1,700 people are hospitalized daily in Switzerland's emergency departments. Post time change, admissions rise significantly. After winter time begins, accidents decrease, but circulatory and respiratory diseases increase post summer time.

The daily peak shifts earlier in the fall and later in the spring. Mondays remain busiest, with around 20 percent more admissions than weekends or holidays. Younger people under 65 are slightly more affected by the time change.

The time change impacts emergency admissions, with winter and summer time both seeing increased cases. Hospitals should anticipate and prepare for these shifts to ensure adequate care.
