Mental health struggle once viewed as a shameful secret - Struggles with Depression Once Labeled as a Handicap – Shared by Patrick Kalupa

Get ready, TV fans! Actor Patrick Kalupa, recognized for his role as the charming Dr. Nice, is all for the current TV trend where mental health issues are no longer awkward to discuss. In an exclusive chat with dpa, the 45-year-old Berlin TV star shared his thoughts on how mental illnesses, often tainted with cliché and stigma in the 90s, are now being depicted more authenticity.

In the upcoming season of Dr. Nice (Sunday, May 11, 8:15 PM, ZDF), Dr. Moritz Neiss will visit a psychologist due to emotional stress. Kalupa, who plays the main character, teased, "The internal battles my character faces after a severe accident will be explored, both physically and psychologically." The series tackles the topic of depression in a refreshing, empathetic, and modern way that embodies a new sense of lightness through its unique humor.

The Daring Love Scene Beneath the Icy Waters

Remember when discussing mental health issues was a taboo? Well, thankfully those days are long gone – thanks, in part, to groundbreaking TV depictions like Dr. Nice. Kalupa recalls, "The sudden death of footballer Robert Enke in 2009 opened the floodgates for open discussion about mental disorders like depression."

While filming the new season, a memorable moment involved a romantic underwater love scene between Kalupa and his co-star, the incredible Brigitte Zeh. Embracing the challenge, the actors had to swim in six-degree cold water while delivering passionate dialogue. Kalupa admitted that "swimming romantically while holding your breath is no joke, but it turned out to be a fantastic scene!"
