Spider invasions in German supermarkets: Brazilian wandering spiders and their counterparts induce panic in shoppers across the country

In the world of arachnids, banana spiders have gained a reputation that is both intriguing and fear-inducing. However, a closer examination of the facts reveals a different story. Here's what you need to know about the banana spiders commonly found in German supermarkets.

Firstly, it's essential to clarify that the term 'banana spider' is not a scientific classification. Instead, it refers to various spider species that are often found in or around banana plants and shipments. Among these, four types are commonly found in German supermarkets: the Large Wandering Spider, Warm House Giant Crab Spider, Phoneutria epilata, and the House Giant Crab Spider, also known as Heteropoda venatoria.

The Large Wandering Spider, scientifically known as Cupiennius salei, is not as fearsome as its nickname might suggest. It is not aggressive and tends to flee in stressful situations. Although it can bite in rare cases, the effects on humans are usually minor, comparable to a wasp sting.

On the other hand, the House Giant Crab Spider is more aggressive and will bite when provoked. Its bite can cause symptoms similar to those of a Giant Wandering Spider, but these symptoms typically last for only a day.

The Phoneutria epilata, a recently discovered spider species from Central and South America, is known for its aggression and immediate biting. Its bite can cause symptoms such as nausea, dizziness, vomiting, sweating, swelling, and irritation of the lymph vessels. However, it is not commonly found in German supermarkets.

The 'Brazilian Wandering Spider', or Phoneutria nigriventer, is the most dangerous banana spider found in Germany and the world's deadliest spider. It is native to Brazil and is known for its extreme aggression and potent venom. However, only about three people die from its bite each year in Brazil, and only 0.8% of the bananas on the German market come from Brazil, making the likelihood of coming into contact with a Brazilian Wandering Spider very low.

Other banana spiders commonly found in supermarkets include the Golden Silk Orb-weaver (Nephila clavipes) and other orb-weaver spiders. These spiders are usually medium to large with distinctive yellowish or golden markings and long legs. While some can bite if provoked, their venom is generally mild and not medically significant.

In summary, while banana spiders can sometimes be found in banana shipments, they are rarely harmful, and their presence in German supermarkets is infrequent. If you encounter a spider in your bananas, it is best to handle it with care and contact a local pest control expert or entomologist for identification and safety advice.
