Smelly Incident at Sports Hall in Gronau Prompts Extensive Investigation, 18 Citing Health Issues

On Monday afternoon, an incident at the sports hall on Laubstiege in Gronau came to an end. The Fire Department Gronau, along with emergency services, police, and technical advisors from the THW, responded to an alert about an unknown, irritating odor that caused health issues for several people.

The alert was raised at 12:12 PM, and the Fire Department Gronau dispatched a large contingent, including firefighters from Gronau, Ahaus, Ochtrup, and Vreden. Upon arrival, they found that a total of 18 children and teachers had complained of respiratory irritation, nausea, and headaches. Emergency services examined and cared for the affected individuals on-site.

Extensive measurements were conducted by the fire department in the affected changing room and adjacent areas. Fortunately, no measurable harmful substances were detected during the measurements. However, the source of the perceived odor remains unknown.

The police have initiated investigations into the possible cause of the incident, and the affected people, who are visitors and users of the sports hall, are being investigated by the police.
