Sharjah, UAE: Indian support group initiates counseling services for domestic abuse victims among expatriates, following tragic deaths

In the wake of recent tragic incidents involving Indian expatriates in Sharjah, the Indian Association Sharjah (IAS) has taken a proactive step to address the growing concerns within the community. The association has announced the launch of weekly confidential counselling sessions, aimed at providing support to Indian expatriates experiencing family disputes, domestic violence, and other related conflicts.

### Details of the Initiative

The "Family Dispute Redressal Session" will be held every Saturday at the IAS premises, starting August 2, 2025. These sessions will offer a safe, confidential space for individuals to discuss their issues without fear of stigma or exposure. The initiative is designed to prevent further tragedies and foster a safer, more supportive environment for Indian expatriates in Sharjah.

### Support from the Indian Consulate and Sharjah Police

The IAS has collaborated closely with the Sharjah Police’s Community Preventive and Protection Department, with senior officers such as Major Nazeer Bin Ahamed, Captain Ghanima Essa, and Inspector Awad Mohammed expressing their full support for the initiative. The sessions will also be coordinated with the Indian Consulate, and in specific cases involving personal and legal matters, referral to the Indian Consulate for further assistance will be available.

### Focus and Additional Support

The counselling sessions will focus on providing help for job-related disputes, domestic violence, child custody matters, and more. In addition to the weekly sessions, a 24/7 helpline (800700) has been established for urgent support, staffed by trained officers. For cases that cannot be resolved within the committee, referral to the Indian Consulate for complex cases will be available.

### The Role of IAS

The IAS is the primary organizer of this initiative, providing both the venue and facilitators for the counselling sessions. The association has taken a proactive role in addressing the growing concerns within the Indian expatriate community, particularly following recent incidents that highlighted the lack of accessible support systems.

This initiative represents a significant step forward in community-based support for expatriates facing family challenges in Sharjah, combining confidential counselling, police collaboration, and access to consular services. The IAS counselling sessions aim to give people a space to talk, get support, and resolve issues before they escalate.
