Berlin's Mayor Calls for More Flexible Night Flight Ban at BER Airport

Berlin's governing mayor, Kai Wegner, has called for a more flexible night flight ban at the capital's main airport, BER. The current night flight ban at BER significantly affects air traffic, causing delays and additional costs for airlines and passengers.

The night flight ban is currently staggered, with quieter aircraft allowed between 10:30 PM and midnight, and from 5:30 AM to 6:00 AM. However, between midnight and 5:00 AM, regular flights are suspended, with only postal, government, surveying, and ambulance flights permitted.

Wegner's proposal for a more flexible night flight ban is a recent development. It aims to strike a balance between the needs of the airport and the nearby residents' sleep and public health. The mayor suggests that exceptions could be made for minor deviations in the night flight ban, which would help avoid additional costs or detours for airlines and passengers in case of minor delays.

The CEO of BER, Aletta von Massenbach, has also recently supported the call for more flexibility in the night flight ban. However, the Brandenburg state government has rejected Wegner's proposal, citing the need to protect residents. They oppose easing nighttime restrictions to protect local residents, despite calls from Berlin's mayor and BER management for more flexible exemptions around minor delays and noise levels.

The night flight ban at BER is a contentious issue, with different parties advocating for varying degrees of flexibility to balance the needs of the airport and the nearby residents. Passenger aircraft are often redirected due to delays of just a few minutes, leading to extra travel time and costs for passengers.

The night flight ban is currently in place to ensure the sleep of nearby residents and protect public health. However, Wegner argues that a more flexible approach could help reduce costs and inconvenience for both airlines and passengers, while still respecting the needs of the local community. The proposal for a more flexible night flight ban at BER is being advocated by Berlin's governing mayor Kai Wegner.
