Recognition of Outstanding Nursing Achievements Granted to Strong Memorial Hospital
Strong Memorial Hospital Receives Fourth Consecutive Magnet Designation
Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, New York, has once again been recognised as a Magnet® hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), making it the only area hospital to attain a fourth consecutive recognition.
The Magnet Recognition Program, a globally recognised gold standard for nursing excellence, is designed to recognise healthcare organisations that provide the best in nursing care and professionalism. Strong Memorial Hospital's commitment to nursing excellence and a positive organisational culture has resulted in improved patient outcomes and a more satisfied, stable nursing staff.
Recently retired Chief Nursing Officer and Associate Vice President Pat Witzel was credited for making the Magnet re-designation possible. Strong Memorial Hospital employs 5,694 nursing professionals, and the Nursing Practice at Strong Memorial Hospital outperformed national benchmarks in all four areas: Commitment, Employee, Manager, and Organization.
Research indicates that Magnet institutions like Strong enjoy better patient outcomes, including lower mortality rates, when compared to non-Magnet institutions. They also achieve higher patient satisfaction, especially regarding nurse communication and availability of help. For nursing staff, Magnet status fosters an empowered, supportive, and professionally nurturing work environment, promoting nurse engagement and job satisfaction.
Magnet hospitals tend to have higher nurse retention rates, lower turnover, and less intention among nurses to leave their positions, which helps maintain an experienced and skilled nursing workforce. Nurses in Magnet organizations benefit from advanced nursing standards, professional development opportunities, and involvement in decision-making.
Strong Memorial Hospital's Professional Nursing Council, high levels of nurse satisfaction, approaches to increase specialty certification rates, and nurse-driven programs centered on clinical outcomes were among the hospital's strengths cited by Magnet appraisers. Strong affiliates Highland Hospital and F.F. Thompson Hospital have also earned Magnet status.
The Magnet Recognition Program process is rigorous, requiring thousands of pages of documentation and a four-day visit from an ANCC Magnet appraisal team. Stephanie VonBacho, Magnet Program Director at Strong Memorial Hospital, stated that the hospital empowers its nurses to assist with important decisions regarding patient care, provides them with opportunities to keep learning throughout their careers, and recognises their exceptional contributions to patient- and family-centered care.
Strong was the first hospital in Rochester to achieve Magnet status in 2004. During a nursing shortage in the 1980s, Strong Memorial Hospital was among 41 hospitals nationwide that continued to recruit and retain talented nurses, earning the hospital the label of "magnets" for the nursing profession by the task force examining their efforts.
