Rainbow Medical Institute set to acquire a significant 76% share in Pratiksha Hospital, Guwahati, at an estimated cost of ₹171 crore
Rainbow Children's Medicare Expands into Northeast India
Rainbow Children's Medicare Ltd, a leading pediatric and perinatal healthcare provider, has made a significant move into Northeast India. The company has acquired a 76% stake in Pratiksha Hospital, Guwahati, Assam, marking its strategic entry into the region.
Historical Background and Expansion Strategy
Before this acquisition, Rainbow Children's Medicare primarily operated in South India with 21 hospitals across 8 cities. The Guwahati-based Pratiksha Hospital, founded in 1995 by Dr. Pramod Kumar Sharma, was selected as the regional hub. Rainbow plans to expand pediatric, tertiary, and quaternary care services across Assam and neighboring states, using Pratiksha Hospital as a base.
The acquisition, valued at approximately ₹171 crore, was fully funded internally by Rainbow Children's Medicare without external borrowing. The existing Pratiksha promoters, including founder Dr. Sharma, retain a minority 24% stake and will remain involved in operations for at least five years to support the expansion.
Services and Healthcare Impact
Pratiksha Hospital annually handles over 100,000 outpatient visits, 1,200 admissions, 1,200 deliveries, and 700+ IVF cycles. Rainbow aims to enhance pediatric super-specialty services, neonatal and maternal care, and introduce patient transport services in the Northeast using Pratiksha as a hub. There are also intentions to establish smaller spoke hospitals in other northeastern states to improve regional healthcare access.
Integration with Rainbow’s national hubs in Hyderabad, Delhi, Bengaluru, and Chennai will enable advanced referrals and comprehensive care.
Impact on Assam and the Northeast Region
This expansion brings high-quality pediatric and women’s health services to the traditionally underserved Northeast Indian market, addressing critical gaps in specialized child and maternity healthcare. The move taps into demographic trends such as rising birth rates in parts of the Northeast, creating long-term growth opportunities for pediatric healthcare.
Post-acquisition, the hospital will be rebranded as Pratiksha Rainbow Children’s Hospital, strengthening brand presence and further improving healthcare delivery standards in the region.
In summary, Rainbow Children’s Medicare Ltd’s acquisition and expansion in Northeast India via Pratiksha Hospital represents a major strategic initiative to enhance specialized pediatric and maternal healthcare in Assam and the wider Northeast, offering advanced services and creating a scalable hub-and-spoke model for regional growth.
Ramesh Kancharla, Chairman & Managing Director of RCML, stated that this partnership will enable them to reach a wider community and deliver top-tier pediatric and maternal care to the families of Assam and Northeast India. Pratiksha Hospital commenced operations in Guwahati and delivered its first IVF baby in February 1997.
