Xperiencing MIT as a student and staff member is one-of-a-kind. Anthony Hallee-Farrell '13, currently a senior program and technical associate for the MIT Community Services Office (CSO), joined the MIT family through education, then as an employee. He's been a committed MITer for 15 years, spending four years as a student and the last 11 as staff.

The CSO, which is part of Institute Events in the Office of the President, supports key student initiatives like the MIT Activities Committee, Quarter Century Club, Association of MIT Retirees, and MIT Community Service Fund. Their goal is to fortify connections between the Institute and its community members, and improve work-life experiences for staff, faculty, and retirees through social, educational, and cultural activities.

Before Hallee-Farrell's college years, he spent the summer working as an administrative assistant with the federal courts in New York, digitizing case files. After this stint, he knew he wanted to work with individuals driven by their passions. As an MIT student, he made his skills shine by assisting in the Admissions Office and the Technology Licensing Office (TLO). When job-hunting post-graduation, he applied for a full-time job with MIT and was ecstatic to learn about their exceptional benefits. After six months as a temp worker at the TLO, he joined the CSO, ultimately becoming the go-to person for office fixes and project assistance.

An MIT rarity, Hallee-Farrell was the only student majoring solely in literature in the Class of 2013. This made him the sole student to walk for the Literature Section during Commencement. The committed MIT supporter jumped at opportunities to help his community as a student, joining the Office of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Student Services, also known as the Rainbow Lounge. As a part of a task force, he advocated for trans health care coverage under student health insurance and later accepted the role of championing for community connections in the CSO.

As a nod to his remarkable experiences, Hallee-Farrell was proud to share anecdotes about his work on the Advanced Functional Fabrics of America proposal, a significant collaboration between MIT and other universities and the United States Department of Defense (DoD). The project involved regular meetings with official DoD members, including then-Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter. On behalf of the staff, he received a challenge coin as a memento, a unique keepsake he cherishes.

Throughout his career, Hallee-Farrell has appreciated being surrounded by like-minded, dedicated individuals. The purpose of the CSO is to foster these connections, whether by encouraging community engagement through activities like the MIT Activities Committee or celebrating long-standing connections with the Quarter Century Club and Retirees Association. His advice to newcomers is to take advantage of the numerous resources available at MIT, such as reaching out to the Ombuds Office for assistance or utilizing funds from the MIT Community Services Fund for volunteer projects.
