Plane crash on Navajo Nation in northern Arizona claims lives of four individuals in a medical transport vehicle.

The Navajo Nation is mourning the tragic loss of four lives following a small medical transport plane crash near the Chinle airport on August 5, 2025. The Beechcraft King Air 300, operated by CSI Aviation, was en route to pick up a critically ill patient from the Indian Health Service hospital when it met with an unfortunate incident[1][2].

The plane, which originated from Albuquerque, New Mexico, was serving medical transport needs[1][2]. The crash occurred around 12:44 p.m. local time, and the plane caught fire upon impact[1][3]. Emergency services and tribal authorities responded swiftly to the scene, with reports of black smoke at the airport.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are currently investigating the incident, but no definitive cause has been released[1][3]. The exact cause or contributing factors to the crash remain unknown at this time; official findings from the NTSB and FAA are pending[1][3].

The Navajo Nation President, Buu Nygren, expressed heartbreak over the loss[4]. This incident marks the second crash involving a medical transport plane within a few months, with a separate crash in Philadelphia occurring in January, claiming eight lives[5].

The Navajo Nation's reservation spans across Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah, covering an area of 27,000 square miles (70,000 square kilometers)[6]. Due to most hospitals not offering advanced or trauma care, medical transports by air are common in the region[7].

Access to the Chinle airport has been temporarily closed for investigative purposes[3]. No further public information about the failure or mechanical issues has been disclosed. The voice recorder on the plane that crashed in Philadelphia was not working, according to the NTSB[8].

As the investigation continues, the Navajo Nation and the wider community await official findings to shed light on the unfortunate incident.
