Over 1,100 Tulsans Need Replacement COVID-19 Vaccine Dose Due to Cold Chain Error
Over 1,100 individuals in Tulsa received a dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine with an internal cold chain protocol error. The Community Vaccination Center at Tulsa Community College Northeast Campus accepts walk-ins for replacement doses, with no appointment required.
The error involved storing the vaccine in a freezer for longer than recommended, up to 14 additional days. Affected clinics include James O. Goodwin Health Center, Central Regional Health Center, Sand Springs Health Center, and North Regional Health and Wellness Center. Despite the error, there is no known health risk to these individuals. However, the dose must be repeated to ensure full health insurance coverage. The CDC advises repeating the dose as soon as possible in the opposite arm. Individuals who received the invalid dose will be contacted to schedule a repeat dose. Receiving an additional dose is not expected to have an elevated risk and side effects will be similar to previous doses. As of May 16, our website has administered more than 122,311 doses of COVID-19 vaccine, offering Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, or Johnson & Johnson vaccines at various locations.
