Our organization's "yellow campaign" is resuming once more

Each year, unpicked fruit spoils on the tree. To combat this, our 'Yellow Ribbon' project is in action, aiming to prevent waste this year. The yellow ribbon or band encircling the tree trunk indicates that the fruit on that specific tree is fair game, no landowner permission required for its...

Our organization's "yellow campaign" is resuming once more

In an effort to reduce food waste and promote biodiversity, the Yellow Ribbon initiative has been ongoing for at least three years in the Regensburg district. This initiative, a collaboration between multiple entities including the organisation, local associations, and county services, encourages the free harvesting of unharvested fruits from trees.

The marking of these 'pick-your-own' trees is a cooperative venture between the organisation, the local OGV association, and the county's garden advisory service. A yellow ribbon or ring on the trunk of a tree indicates that it can be harvested for free without asking the owner. Over 700 fruit trees are located along public bike and hiking paths, county roads, and within the organisation.

Councilwoman Tanja Schweiger initiated the marking of these trees with a yellow ribbon three years ago. The exact locations, number, and types of fruits to be harvested can be found on the county's website: https://www.landkreis-regensburg.de/buergerservice/natur-umwelt/gartenkultur-landespflege/?aktion-gelbes-band-naschbaeume-im-landkreis&orga=163085.

The Yellow Ribbon initiative aims to prevent fruits from rotting in the fields. Picking fruits is at your own risk, and no liability is assumed for accidents. Trees and their surroundings must not be damaged during the picking process. It's important to note that yellow ribbons on trees not marked with a yellow ribbon should not be picked without permission.

Fruits can only be used for personal use, not commercially. Enjoying local fruits provides a regional taste variety that is not typically found in supermarkets. Few of these trees are actually harvested, making it a unique opportunity for locals to enjoy fresh, local produce.

The county's garden advisory service and the local OGV association have been promoting the care and preservation of orchards through advice and events for years. Orchards are important habitats in the cultural landscape and their care and preservation contribute to biodiversity.

Some county municipalities also participate in the initiative. The initiative has been successful in reducing food waste and promoting a sense of community in the Regensburg district. For those interested in participating, be sure to check the county's website for more information.
