A Groundbreaking Verdict: The Pollachi Gang Rape Case

Nine Convicted Individuals Receive Life Imprisonment in the 2019 Pollachi Sexual Assault Case from Tamil Nadu

Chennai: Over six years since nine men were accused of sexually assaulting and blackmailing numerous women in Tamil Nadu's Pollachi, a court has handed down their guilty verdict. In a landmark judgment, sessions court presiding judge R Nandhini Devi found the perpetrators guilty of heinous crimes such as gangrape, repeated rape, and sexual exploitation.

The guilty parties are: Sabarirajan alias Rishwanth, 32, Thirunavukarasu, 34, T Vasantha Kumar, 30, M Sathish, 33, R Mani alias Manivannan, P Babu, 33, Haron Paul, 32, Arulanantham, 39, Arun Kumar, 33, and an additional unnamed accused who was reportedly a minor at the time of the crime. Each of the eight convicts will serve a life sentence until death.

These men, who have been in custody at the Salem Central Prison since their arrest in 2019, were brought to court under heavy police protection this morning in Coimbatore. Due to heightened vigilance and security measures in place, Coimbatore and the court complex were guarded throughout the proceedings.

A vast array of evidence, comprising over 200 documents and 400 electronic items, encompassing forensic-validated videos of the assaults, were utilized during the trial. "The survivors' testimonies, supported by digital evidence, were crucial in corroborating their traumatic experiences. No witnesses turned hostile, and the Witness Protection Act ensured their identities and safety were safeguard," stated the public prosecutor.

It's unfortunate that only eight survivors officially reported the crimes they had endured, given the fear of societal stigma and the prospect of retaliation. This highlights the urgent need for a supportive environment that encourages victims to come forward.

Women's rights activists celebrated the convictions but pressed for a comprehensive follow-through. "This verdict provides relief but survivors require compensation, counseling, and job assurances from the government to aid in their healing process," said a member of the Tamil Nadu Women's Collective.

The Pollachi Saga

The sinister pattern of exploitation in Pollachi, involving at least eight victims, was brought to light in 2019. The survivors included a college student and others who were sexually assaulted, filmed, and blackmailed for sexual favors and money between 2016 and 2018.

The accused men were charged under stringent sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for crimes such as rape, gang rape, repeated rape, criminal conspiracy, sexual harassment, and blackmail. They would film their reprehensible acts of sexual violence to use as leverage to force the victims into continued exploitation.

The case was initially handled by the Pollachi police, but it was later transferred to the Tamil Nadu Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CID) following demands for an impartial inquiry. Eventually, the case was handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) due to mounting public pressure.

During the investigation, a systemic pattern of abuse was uncovered, with the victims alleging that the perpetrators engaged in threatening conduct, threatening to disseminate their videos to their families and communities if they did not comply.

The court also ordered the state government to pay a total of ₹85 lakh in compensation to the eight survivors who testified in the case. This verdict marks a significant step towards justice for the victims, but there are still ongoing challenges in ensuring their safety and well-being. Additionally, the case has drawn scrutiny as a test for justice in cases of gender-based violence, particularly those involving prolonged coercion and institutional delays.

Women's rights advocates and civil society groups closely monitored the proceedings, emphasizing the need for accountability in cases where victims often faced stigma and procedural hurdles. There has been significant public response to the verdict, with many viewing it as a strong message against sexual violence. However, concerns remain about systemic issues that allowed such crimes to occur, and the urgent need for societal change to prevent similar incidents in the future.
