Mobile ophthalmology team restores sight of a 37-year-old resident in Aldansky
In the frigid landscapes of Yakutia, mobile ophthalmology teams have been making a significant impact, bringing essential surgeries to remote areas. Recently, these teams performed cataract surgeries on 79 people, including an 86-year-old resident, in the Aldan Ulus.
One of these patients was Yuri Noryatkin, a resident of the Aldan District, who experienced an early onset of cataracts at the age of 37. His surgeries, performed by the skilled hands of Dr. Ekaterina Basova from the Yakutsk Republican Ophthalmological Hospital, have since restored his sight.
Noryatkin expressed his gratitude towards the Yakutsk ophthalmologists for their high standard of care. His surgeries were part of the OMS policy, ensuring that all operations performed by the hospital are free of charge.
Interestingly, Yakutia Senator Egor Borisov was also a patient of the republican ophthalmological hospital, undergoing surgery in July 2020. The hospital teams travel to provide surgeries, bringing all necessary equipment and supplies, ensuring that even those in hard-to-reach settlements receive the care they need.
Following his surgeries, Noryatkin underwent a rehabilitation period to adjust to bright colours and light. He also received advice from the hospital staff to consult with geneticists due to the early onset of his cataracts.
Ivan Lutskan, the chief doctor of the Yakutsk Republican Ophthalmological Hospital, emphasised the importance of their work in remote areas of the republic, where operating ophthalmologists are scarce.
Noryatkin's story is a testament to the life-changing work being done by the mobile ophthalmology teams in Yakutia. His successful surgeries have not only restored his sight but also brought hope to many others in need.
