Ministry update on ecological activities in Omsk region

Results of the National Project "Ecology" in Our City

In a reveal during the city's Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology's college meeting on Thursday, April 3, 2025, updates on the 2024 year's work and plans for the upcoming 2025 year were discussed, including the status of the national project "Ecology". The talk zeroed in on the protection of the atmosphere and waste management. (Tag: Ecology, Society, Tatyana Havronina)

In the "Clean Air" initiative, Omsk updated manufacturing plants, installed gas filtration equipment, gasified the private sector, and acquired eco-friendly transportation. These actions led to a substantial decrease of pollutant emissions by over 42,000 tons.

The city completed the liquidation of landfills in Central, Soviet, Kirov, and Lenin administrative districts within the regional project "Clean Country". Notably, 17 municipal entities within Omsk received subsidies for creating new container grounds, resulting in 614 waste storage spaces and 1,280 containers being installed in 2024. Subsidies were granted to 9 municipalities to liquidate unauthorized landfills, leading to the closure of 35 landfills spanning over 76 acres.

Tatyana Havronina, Minster of Natural Resources and Ecology of Omsk, discussed the planned activities of the "Environmental Well-being" national project:

"We continue our comprehensive work to improve the environmental situation in Omsk within the new national project "Environmental Well-being," and we have specific tasks ahead. For the "Clean Air" project in 2025-2026, additional emission reduction is planned for more than 7,800 tons. Of course, we continue to work on the development of a waste management system and the creation of three modern waste treatment and burial complexes in Tarsk, Tavrichesk, and Omsk regions."

The possibility of including damage-accumulated sites in Omsk for the federal project "General Cleanup" and clearing part of the Irtish River's aquatory within the park "Green Island" for the federal project "Water Russia" under the "Environmental Well-being" national project is under consideration.

Recently, an explosion and fire occurred at the Gazpromneft-ONPZ oil refinery in Omsk on April 28th, 2025, though the blaze was eventually contained. The long-term environmental impacts remain unclear, drawing attention to the need for robust environmental regulations in industrial cities like Omsk. (See [5] for the refinery fire's analysis.) Global industrial trends suggest a growing emphasis on cleaner production methods, which could indirectly impact Russian policies toward air quality and waste management. (See [1] for Russian aerospace manufacturing priorities and [2] for international industry advancements.)

For definitive plans regarding Omsk's future environmental strategies, official Russian government announcements or regional Omsk administration documents would be required, which are not available in the provided results. In light of the recent events, it becomes increasingly crucial to implement comprehensive environmental measures to safeguard Omsk's air and waste management.

  1. The National Project "Environmental Well-being" in Omsk, as discussed by Tatyana Havronina, aims to further reduce pollutant emissions beyond the 2024 achievements of over 7,800 tons.
  2. Within the "Environmental Well-being" project, the inclusion of damage-accumulated sites in Omsk for the federal project "General Cleanup" and the clearing of part of the Irtish River's aquatory for the federal project "Water Russia" are currently under consideration.
  3. The "Clean Air" project's planned activities under the "Environmental Well-being" national project also encompass the development of a waste management system and the creation of three modern waste treatment and burial complexes in specific regions of Omsk.
  4. The long-term environmental impact of the explosion and fire at the Gazpromneft-ONPZ oil refinery in Omsk, which occurred on April 28th, 2025, remains unclear, raising concerns about the need for stringent environmental regulations in industrial cities like Omsk.
