In a tragic turn of events, celebrated chef Anne Burrell, known for her spiky platinum blonde hair and memorable cooking quotes, has passed away at the age of 55. The City of New York Office of Chief Medical Examiner concluded that suicide was the cause of death, with the medical examiner stating that Burrell died due to "acute intoxication due to the combined effects of diphenhydramine, ethanol, cetirizine, and amphetamine."

Upon returning to the U.S. in 1998, she worked at kitchens in New York City under Lidia Bastianich.

Anne Burrell's career took off when she became the chef at Savoy, a prix fixe dining room, and later transitioned to teaching at the Institute of Culinary Education (ICE) in New York. She was named chef for Italian Wine Merchants by Joe Bastianich and Mario Batali, and later became executive chef of Centro Vinoteca, an Italian restaurant in NYC's West Village, opening in 2007 and leaving in September 2008 due to schedule constraints.

Burrell's television career flourished with her hosting her own Emmy-nominated series, "Secrets of a Restaurant Chef," which debuted in June 2008 and ran for nine seasons until April 2012. She also co-launched and hosted the Food Network cooking competition show "Worst Cooks in America," hosting it through 2024. Besides TV and restaurants, she taught at ICE and authored two cookbooks, including the New York Times bestseller "Cook Like a Rock Star."
