In York Region, the number of measles cases has been on the rise, according to a statement issued by York Region Public Health on Thursday. As of the statement, there have been five confirmed cases of measles in the region.

This latest development comes after a period of significant increase in measles cases in Ontario. In the spring, health officials were dealing with hundreds of new infections per week, particularly in southwestern Ontario. However, by August, the number of measles cases in Ontario dropped over the summer and was back to single digits, marking a positive trend.

Unfortunately, this trend has reversed in York Region since September 4, with the number of measles cases growing steadily. This increase is due in part to unvaccinated pockets of the population.

The institutions coordinating the measures to control the measles outbreak in York Region are the regional public health authorities, specifically York Region Public Health. They are urging people to monitor for symptoms and ensure their vaccines are up to date.

Potential measles exposures have been reported at Kids Club Toronto on Bathurst Street and Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital emergency room. Anyone who visited these locations during the specified dates and times should be aware of the potential risk and seek medical attention if they develop symptoms.

Symptoms of measles typically include fever, cough, runny nose, and a rash that starts on the face and spreads to the rest of the body. If you suspect you have been exposed to measles or are experiencing these symptoms, it is crucial to contact your healthcare provider immediately.

Measles is a highly contagious disease, and it is important to take the necessary precautions to protect yourself and others. Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent measles. If you are unsure about your vaccination status, it is advisable to consult with your healthcare provider.

By taking these steps and working together, we can help control the spread of measles and protect our communities from this preventable disease. For the latest updates and information on the measles outbreak in York Region, visit the York Region Public Health website.
