Life-Threatening Complications: recent study reveals devastating side effects of a lifesaving treatment

Cardiac Arrest, Bone Fractures, Internal Bleeding: An Inside Look at Emergency Response Teams

The NDR Nordreportage series "112 - Emergency Call North" offers a vivid portrayal of rescue workers in action. The four-episode documentary is available for streaming in the ARD Mediathek starting June 1, 2023.

In Lower Saxony's Krummhorn, a rescue helicopter, "Christoph 26," came to the aid of a patient with a heart attack. The patient's heart rate was startlingly high at 245, necessitating a shock to regulate it. However, the man fell into cardiac arrest following the shock. Doctor Christopher Goersch immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and administered another shock. After a harrowing 90 seconds, the patient's pulse was restored, and they were revived.

The daily life of rescuers is marked by untamed stress. In the emergency room of Helios Clinics in Schwerin, orthopedic surgeon Hans Christoph Vonderlind waited for a brief reprieve after seven hours of work. He was able to take a short break while his colleagues prepared for surgery on a patient with a broken upper arm and trapped nerve. Yet, Vonderlind was soon called to attend to another patient, a cyclist with internal bleeding. The cause was a ruptured kidney, necessitating the intervention of the urology department. Vonderlind then returned to his operation, with another ten hours of work ahead.

The NDR-accompanied teams offer a gripping insight into the daily lives of the rescue workers. The first episode of the series will air on NDR at 6:15 PM from June 2, 2023, to June 5, 2023. It can also be found in the ARD Mediathek.

The work of emergency responders is arduous, often requiring them to confront life-threatening situations and long hours on duty. The series aims to shed light on the challenges these professionals face while performing their duties.

Science plays a crucial role in the medical-conditions concerns that emergency response teams encounter, such as the cardiac arrest experienced by the patient in Lower Saxony. Health-and-wellness practitioners, like Doctor Christopher Goersch, rely on scientific advancements in diagnostics and treatments to ensure proper care and revival for patients like the one revived by cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and shocks. This series offers an inside look at the daily lives of these professionals, highlighting their commitment to maintaining public health and wellness in various emergency situations.
