Latvia's Covid-19 Surge Hits Young Patients, Immunocompromised Await Transplants

Latvia's Covid-19 situation has worsened, with a surge in cases and hospitalisations. The virus now affects all age groups, including young patients. Meanwhile, a Kuldīga resident, Agrita Bergholde, awaits a lung transplant due to Covid-19 complications.

The rise in Covid-19 cases has led to an increase in hospitalisations. Currently, 97 patients are being treated, with half having Covid-19 as their primary diagnosis. The virus now affects young patients too, causing weakness and marked intoxication lasting 2-3 days. Riga East Hospital has reported three Covid-19-related deaths this week, all involving patients over 80 years old with chronic illnesses.

Agrita Bergholde, a resident of Kuldīga, was hospitalised in August after becoming unconscious due to lack of oxygen and high temperature. Now, she awaits a lung transplant due to her compromised immunity and history of oncological treatment. Acting Head of the Centre for Pulmonary Diseases and Thoracic Surgery at Stradiņš Hospital, Zaiga Kravale, reports an increase in Covid-19 patients, with immunosuppressed patients like Agrita being the most affected. The chief physician also notes that some patients are experiencing bilateral pneumonia, respiratory failure, and oxygen dependence.

The incidence of Covid-19 is rising in all European Union countries, including Latvia. Laboratory-confirmed cases have reached 17 per cent, several times higher than in July. The virus is now more widespread, and patients are advised to stay at home and contact their family doctor if necessary, with no strict time limit for isolation.

Latvia's Covid-19 situation remains serious, with rising cases and severe illnesses. Young patients are now affected, and immunosuppressed individuals like Agrita Bergholde face a higher risk. As the virus spreads, it's crucial for everyone to follow health guidelines and get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.
