Kreis Viersen Launches 'Gesunde Kommune' Program for Ninth-Grade Students

Kreis Viersen and KreisSportBund Viersen e.V. have launched 'Gesunde Kommune Kreis Viersen', a health-promoting program for ninth-grade students. Funded by AOK Rheinland/Hamburg, Barmer, and Techniker Krankenkasse until 2027, the 13-week program covers nutrition, sustainability, and mental and physical health. Students will apply their knowledge through communal cooking and creating a cookbook.

The program aims to educate students about a health-promoting lifestyle in a sustainable and relevant way. It is cooperated and supported by various partners, including health insurance companies and local organizations. Besides the 13-week program, further action days, publication of health tips, and training of multipliers are planned to sustainably anchor the topic of health within the school community and beyond.

On September 25th, the waste management department of Kreis Viersen and Foodsharing educated students about food waste. They also prepared a healthy snack together, demonstrating the practical application of the program's teachings.

The 'Gesunde Kommune Kreis Viersen' network is a comprehensive initiative to promote health and sustainability among students. With the support of multiple partners and a well-rounded curriculum, the program seeks to create lasting change in the school community and beyond. The first action day on food waste and healthy snack preparation has already been successfully implemented.
