Karnataka administration collaborates with NASSCOM to initiate Center of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence

The Government of Karnataka has announced the launch of a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DS&AI). NASSCOM, the leading trade body for the tech industry in India, is the program and implementation partner for this ambitious initiative.

The CoE-DS&AI aims to position Karnataka as one of the top five global innovation centers for AI over the next five years. It will be the first-of-its-kind port based on a public-private partnership model. Companies including Microsoft, IBM, Intel, Accenture, and others have committed to supporting this NASSCOM-led Center.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has found various applications across industries, including financial services, automotive, healthcare, retail, and IT-BPM. AI-led automation is expected to deliver USD 100-120 billion in net productivity-led gains for IT-BPM service providers by 2025. The CoE-DS&AI will set the strategic direction, provide technology infrastructure, and promote investment into research and innovation of cutting-edge DS & AI solutions.

The CoE-DS&AI will provide high-end technology capabilities, data, expertise, thought leadership, and curated programs to augment capabilities across academia, enterprises, government, and innovators/advanced start-ups. It will accelerate the ecosystem in Karnataka for the development of data science and artificial intelligence, and is expected to position India as a disruptor in the space of data science and AI.

R Chandrashekhar, President of NASSCOM, views the CoE-DS&AI as strategically placed to offer data-backed solutions to complex global problems. NASSCOM and its industry members are currently defining the future of jobs in the digital transformation era. Data science and AI technologies are seen as one of the biggest growth opportunities for India to capitalize on.

The CoE-DS&AI has received overwhelming response from industry partners, including IBM, Intel, Digital Ocean, and NVIDIA. The initiative has an estimated investment of INR 40 crore. According to Priyank Kharge, Minister for IT, BT & Tourism, Government of Karnataka, the CoE-DS&AI will be a catalyst for the growth of data science and AI, and provide a head-start to, not just the state, but India as a destination to develop global products and solutions.

NASSCOM is in dialogue with other partners to support the CoE-DS&AI. Through its partner ecosystem, NASSCOM will work towards accelerating innovation, enabling industry-oriented research, promoting adoption of data-driven decision making by enterprises, and enabling appropriate skills & talent development. The CoE-DS&AI will proliferate data-driven decision making by enterprises and government, and enhance capacities of academic institutions to impart DS & AI education.

Artificial intelligence has moved beyond scientific labs and is impacting everyday life. The CoE-DS&AI aims to accelerate the ecosystem in Karnataka for the development of data science and artificial intelligence, and NASSCOM will evangelize the CoE-DS&AI program across the country to support India's vision of leading in the digital economy.
