The European Beekeeping Association (EBA) has announced the formation of two Scientific Committees, focusing on bee health and welfare, bee nutrition, and good beekeeping practices, as well as the safety and quality of bee products. The deadline for applications to these committees is fast approaching, with submissions due by September 10th.

The Scientific Committee on Bee Health, led by Urška Ratajc, aims to protect the health of bee colonies in Europe through agro-ecological measures. This committee will focus on reducing bee colony mortality by improving practices related to spraying periods, insecticide and pesticide applications, disease prevention and control, and proper handling of medications for bees.

Candidates for membership on the Scientific Committee on Bee Health should have a strong understanding of European animal health policy, relevant legislative frameworks, and local and regional challenges within the beekeeping domain. They should also be experts in bee health, which often include entomologists, veterinarians, researchers, or experienced beekeepers with specialized knowledge in bee diseases, physiology, and conservation.

In addition to the Scientific Committee on Bee Health, the EBA has also established a Scientific Committee on Safety and Quality of Bee Products. This committee will work towards ensuring the safety and quality of bee products, such as honey and pollen, for consumers.

To apply for membership on either of these committees, interested parties are invited to submit a statement of motivation, outline their area of expertise, and provide references. Applications should be sent to eba@our website by September 10th.

The EBA encourages applications from individuals who are passionate about making a significant difference in bee environments and improving practices related to the health of honeybee colonies. By serving on these committees, members will have the opportunity to collaborate with leading researchers and scientists in their respective fields, as well as contribute to the development of policies and practices that promote the health and welfare of bees in Europe.

The EBA's initiatives aim to make a significant difference in bee environments and the safety and quality of bee products. By establishing these Scientific Committees, the EBA is demonstrating its commitment to protecting the health of bee colonies in Europe and ensuring the sustainability of the beekeeping industry.

  1. The Scientific Committee on Safety and Wellness of Bee Products, chaired by a yet-to-be-named individual, aims to ensure the well-being of Europe's bee colonies by implementing stringent safety measures for bee products like honey and pollen.
  2. Both committees, the Scientific Committee on Bee Health and the Scientific Committee on Safety and Quality of Bee Products, actively seek members with expertise in science—be it entomology, veterinary medicine, research, or practical beekeeping—who are passionate about driving positive changes in bee health and product quality within Europe.
