In Horb am Neckar, three construction workers tragically lost their lives in a workplace accident involving a cable car. Preliminary findings suggest a steel cable, attached to the cable car, may have snarled with transverse wires during ascent, leading to the catastrophic plunge.

The victims, aged between 40 and 46, consisted of two Polish nationals and one German national. They met their end instantly at the bridge construction site, where the cable car was meant to transport them to a bridge pier suspended from a crane.

Authorities are diligently investigating the cause of this calamity. So far, there's no evidence suggesting the cable car was overburdened. Nonetheless, experts and specialists are being consulted to determine if the cable car could safely operate with only one cable attached. Witnesses' testimonies are also crucial in understanding the sequence of events.

The stricken construction site will remain inactive for at least the remainder of the week, as per Porr, the company overseeing the bridge construction.

The incident has cast a pall over the region, with calls for accountability echoing from various quarters. Winfried Hermann, the Minister of Transport, and Peter Rosenberger, the town's Mayor, lamented the accident as one of the worst on a road construction site in the state. They, together with others, paid tribute to the fallen workers by laying flowers near the crash site.

Last year, another incident occurred at the same construction site when several fixing bolts on a formwork and support structure broke unceremoniously. Miraculously, no one was hurt, and work stopped immediately.

The bridge in question forms part of a grand road construction project envisaging a diversion of Bundesstraße 32 over the Neckar valley. At present, the Bundesstraße descends into the valley and winds through Horb's city center.

The bridge's construction will span 2,100 meters, and in some places, it will rise up to 90 meters high. The target completion date is 2028.
