"A Rough Ride for Jan Ullrich" - Cycling Legend's Update after Unexpected Accident
Hospitalized athlete, Jan Ullrich, shares update following severe mishap
Jump on your bike and hit the road... Not for Jan Ullrich, who had a sudden run-in with a vehicle during his training session. The Tour de France champion is now sharing his thoughts from his hospital bed.
Yesterday, while cycling in his hometown of Merdingen, Baden-Württemberg, our cycling legend collided with a car that took his right of way. The 51-year-old former racing champion broke the news to his fans on Instagram, assuring everyone he's in good spirits:
Thumbs up from this hospital bed, I'm on a roll to recovery. Thank you for all the supportive messages. I'll share more details about my accident in my podcast, "Ulle & Rick," with Rick Zabel.
Eurosport has reported that Ullrich suffered a broken collarbone, bruises, and skin abrasions from the accident. Unfortunately, this incident forced him to cancel his appearances on the live show after the Giro d'Italia's stages this weekend.
Despite this unfortunate event, Jan Ullrich is looking forward to his "Jan Ullrich Cycling Festival" next weekend in Bad Dürrheim. Among the expected attendees is his long-time rival, Lance Armstrong, despite Armstrong's Tour de France victories being stripped due to doping. Ullrich and Armstrong formed a close friendship over the years, and their bond remains unbroken.
