Health Professionals Advise: Administer Astrazeneca Vaccine As Soon As Ban is Lifted
Family doctors in Germany are pressing for a quicker distribution of the AstraZeneca vaccine to medical practices, should the vaccination pause be lifted. Ulrich Weigeldt, chairman of the German Association of Family Doctors, emphasised the challenge of rebuilding trust after the vaccination pause. He highlighted the importance of an enormous amount of trust between doctor and patient for vaccinations in family doctor practices.
Andreas Gassen, head of the statutory health insurance doctors, echoed this sentiment. He urged the federal and state governments to start vaccinations in practices faster than previously planned, stating, "every day counts," and there is no time to lose. Gassen asserted that practicing family and specialist doctors are ready to vaccinate nationwide.
The health ministers of the federal and state governments had agreed to start vaccinating in practices only in mid-April. However, Gassen demanded that health ministers work together with Chancellor Angela Merkel at the next vaccination summit to ensure a quick transfer of vaccinations to practices. The final decisions regarding the start of vaccinations in practices will be made at this summit, scheduled for Friday.
