Guiding and Aiding Family in Need
In a bid to better address the needs of families with children with disabilities, the city of Landshut and the district youth welfare office organised a networking event on August 28, 2025. The event, planned as a kick-off for regular networking, took place at the district youth welfare office and was attended by various counselling centres, specialists, and local officials.
Janine Brabender and Katharina Hellmann, two dedicated case managers, orchestrated the event. The goal was to bridge the gap between youth welfare and integration assistance, utilising synergies in cooperation to improve offers, strengthen networking, and develop tailored assistance for families with children with disabilities.
The event was well-received, with all participants agreeing on the need for close cooperation and collaboration. A 2022 study by the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs had revealed that parents of children with disabilities experience high psychological stress, underscoring the importance of such initiatives.
Specialists from the Supplementary Independent Participation Counseling (EUTB) of the Bavarian Red Cross' Open Disabled Work (OBA BRK) and the Lebenshilfe Landshut were also in attendance, lending their expertise to the discussions.
Regular network meetings and coordination take place in related family center networks in regions like Reinfeld/Nordstormarn, with events for parents of children with disabilities being scheduled regularly. For instance, an info evening for parents is scheduled for September 25, 2025, in Lübeck.
Counselling centres can provide relief by guiding affected individuals through the complex support system and assisting with service applications. The city's commissioner for the disabled was also present at the networking event, demonstrating the city's commitment to supporting families with children with disabilities.
The care and support of children with disabilities require a significant amount of time, and events like these aim to provide families with the resources and support they need to navigate this challenging journey. Further meetings are already in the planning stages as a result of the networking event, marking a promising step towards improved support for families with children with disabilities in Landshut.
