Gießen Launches Initiative to Support Sexual Violence Victims

Gießen is set to launch a significant initiative to support victims of sexual violence. From September, a city bus will display a poster promoting the 'Medical Immediate Assistance After Sexual Assault' project, funded by the Hessian Ministry of Labor, Integration, Youth & Social Affairs. This project is part of a larger initiative involving 14 model cities in Hesse, led by the Women's Emergency Call Frankfurt e.V.

The project aims to reduce the burden on victims by allowing them time before deciding to file a report with the police. Victims can anonymously have evidence secured as part of their medical care, with the evidence stored for a year. This gives victims the option to report at a later date without losing crucial evidence.

The project is a collaborative effort involving the Women's and Equality Offices of the City of Gießen, the University Clinic of Gießen and Marburg, the Forensic Institute at the Institute of Legal Medicine, and other organizations for medical, psychological, and social care. The goal is to provide comprehensive support, including ambulatory counseling and assistance, specifically for female victims of violence, including sexual abuse.

In addition to the poster campaign, the project will also include awareness-raising actions in November for the International Day against Violence. This will emphasize that sexual violence is never the victim's fault. The city of Gießen, supported by the Stiftung Frauennotruf Frankfurt e.V., is committed to providing support, protection, and access to emergency medical help for affected women.
