Germany's Health Authorities Urge Flu Vaccination for At-Risk Groups

As the cooler season approaches, health authorities in Germany are advising specific groups to get vaccinated against influenza and other respiratory infections. The Standing Vaccination Commission (STIKO) recommends vaccinations for infants, the elderly, and those with underlying conditions. Major health insurance providers, such as Techniker Krankenkasse, Barmer, DAK-Gesundheit, and AOK, typically cover these vaccinations.

STIKO recommends influenza vaccination for people over 60, those with chronic pre-existing conditions, pregnant women, care facility residents, and others at high risk. Additionally, RSV vaccination is advised for infants in their first year of life, individuals aged 75 and above, and those aged 60 to 74 with certain underlying conditions. An annual Covid-19 booster shot is also recommended for individuals aged 60 and above, those with immune weakness, and care home residents.

Infections can be severe and sometimes life-threatening, particularly for vulnerable groups. To prevent infection, hygiene measures such as thorough hand washing, coughing or sneezing into the elbow or tissue, and regular ventilation are crucial. Pathogens are mainly transmitted through speaking, coughing, and sneezing. If necessary, simultaneous administration of influenza, Covid-19, and pneumococcal vaccinations is possible. Pneumococcal vaccination is also recommended for infants aged two months and above, and individuals aged 60 and above or with certain chronic diseases.

With the cooler season bringing an increased risk of respiratory infections, it is essential for those in high-risk groups to get vaccinated against influenza and other relevant infections. While vaccinations are recommended by STIKO, major health insurance providers typically cover these vaccinations, making them accessible to those who need them most. Alongside vaccinations, maintaining good hygiene practices can help prevent the spread of infections.
