In a collaborative effort with the German Sport University Cologne and the University of Würzburg, Deutsche Krankenversicherung (DKV) has published its latest report on the health behavior of Germans. The DKV Report 2025 reveals a concerning trend - Germans are sitting more than ever before.

The report, now in its eighth edition, sheds light on the fact that on an average workday, Germans spend over ten hours sitting. This is nearly two hours more than a decade ago, with one and a half hours spent on a computer or tablet, three and a half hours at work, and two and a half hours watching TV.

These extended sitting times are considered a "concerning record" by the DKV report, as they are linked to significant health risks. According to the report, only about 2 percent of the population surveyed meet the conditions for a fully healthy lifestyle.

The DKV report, however, did not provide details on the methodology used for the survey or the analysis of the data. It also did not specify the exact changes in sitting times in other areas outside of work, nor did it address the potential impact on overall health outcomes, long-term effects, or provide recommendations on how to reduce sitting times to improve health.

The report did not specify if the increase in sitting times is consistent across different age groups or genders. It also did not discuss the potential long-term effects of the observed increase in sitting times.

Despite these gaps, the DKV report underscores the need for more movement and healthier lifestyle choices among the population. It emphasizes that excessive sitting contributes to negative health outcomes, making it a matter of public health concern.

The DKV report was based on data collected from more than 2,800 people surveyed between February 11 and March 17. It focused on examining the health behavior of Germans, including nutrition, physical activity, alcohol consumption, smoking, stress behavior, and time spent sitting.

This latest report serves as a wake-up call for Germans to reconsider their sedentary habits and adopt healthier lifestyles to mitigate the potential risks associated with extended periods of sitting.

In light of the DKV Report 2025, it's essential for the community to implement policies promoting vocational training in areas such as fitness-and-exercise and health-and-wellness, to combat the rising trend of extended sitting times among Germans. Moreover, universities could consider incorporating science-based vocational training programs aimed at reducing sedentary behaviors and improving overall health, as a responsible response to the growing health concerns highlighted in the report.
