Federal Government Kicks Off Action Week to Raise Awareness of Loneliness
Starting from this week, the German Federal Government has initiated a nationwide three-day event to highlight the issue of loneliness and promote social inclusion across all generations. Minister Karin Prien, of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), announced that the agenda would focus on children and young people, who are considered at a higher risk of experiencing this emotional state.
The ongoing Action Week against Loneliness forms part of a broader government strategy aimed at combating this social health concern across various age groups. This strategy incorporates a wide range of undertakings, such as awareness campaigns, annual awareness weeks, and initiatives designed to prevent and alleviate feelings of isolation.
Minister Prien emphasized the significance of play as a means of fostering social connections for children and young people, with this year's Action Week themed around "Playing Together." Events encompassing play activities are intended to promote interaction, encourage friendships, and reduce feelings of loneliness among young people.
The Federal Ministry supports initiatives that encourage participation from various age groups and communities, while particularly focusing on low-threshold offers where younger individuals can engage in shared activities with older generations. Moreover, the project entitled "Fit und verbunden gegen Einsamkeit" ("Fit and connected against loneliness")—launched by the German Olympic Sports Confederation and co-funded by the Federal Ministry of Health in 2025—establishes local alliances targeted at preventing loneliness, with a specific focus on those with a migration background and youth initiatives that promote inclusion and social cohesion through sports and communal play.
Nationwide awareness campaigns and annual Action Weeks have been underway since autumn 2022, aiming to bring attention to the issue not only for those affected but also for their social circles. The multi-generational centers established under the federal program "Multi-generational Centre. Together – For one another" (2021-2028) play a crucial role by providing communal spaces where individuals of different ages can actively engage side by side, thus strengthening community bonds and reducing loneliness.
Data derived via the Loneliness Barometer informs the Federal Government's assessment of loneliness's extent and refinement of strategies, ensuring that interventions remain relevant and effective. This data-driven approach allows for continuous improvement in the approach to addressing this ever-present social concern.
The Commission, the Council, and the European Parliament are collectively advocating for increased awareness of mental health issues, recognizing its importance in the context of loneliness.
In alignment with the Federal Government's strategy, science and health-and-wellness stakeholders, including the European Parliament, are encouraged to collaborate on initiatives that promote mental health, social inclusion, and combat feelings of loneliness.
