A Genuine Shout-Out to Tamworth's Parkinson's Group

Gathering commemorates, marking a significant milestone for group members.

In a heartfelt call-out during their anniversary celebration last December, Tamworth MP Kevin Anderson praised the tireless efforts of the Tamworth Support Group, a 30-year-old community powerhouse that's been lending a helping hand to those grappling with Parkinson's.

"This group has been a beacon of hope for scores of individuals facing Parkinson's, powered by the tireless devotion of local folks who've generously donated countless hours of their time," Anderson declared. "They've been an unwavering force, delivering care and support to those most in need."

"The group's been steered by a fascinating lineup of community stalwarts," Anderson continued. "I want to especially thank current leader Kevin Robinson, whose inspiring mantra, 'Sharing the load,' resonates with the unbreakable unity and strength a collective can offer."

Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce couldn't make it to the event but sent a letter of congratulations and apologies.

The celebration was hosted at the North Tamworth Bowling Club, complete with tastefully adorned tables and commemorative souvenir placemats boasting photos of the group's seven leaders throughout the years.

Initiated on 2 December 1991, the group was brought to life at a meeting spearheaded by Dr John Dearin from the Tamworth Base Hospital Rehabilitation Unit. Daisy Ivin served as the group's first president, followed by Pat Johnson, Denise Sullivan, Trish Betts, Len Hutton, Brian Sullivan, and the current leader, Kevin Robinson.

Speaking at the event, Brian Sullivan emphasized the vital roles family members, friends, specialists, and carers play in supporting those with Parkinson's.

He further acknowledged the accomplishments of the group, such as lobbying for a Parkinson's nurse, pushing for the Parkinson's exercise program, and the successful seminar on Parkinson's held in 2015. Carers were also recognized for their unwavering support and sacrifice.

In closing, Brian thanked Kevin for leading the anniversary celebrations and applauded the commitment shown by all attendees and members of the group. Though specific details about the group's history and achievements were scant in the information available, their relentless dedication to the Parkinson's community in Tamworth shines brighter than ever.

Science plays a significant role in understanding Parkinson's, and the Tamworth Support Group, with their unwavering efforts, has been instrumental in promoting health-and-wellness for individuals affected by the disease. The group, through various initiatives like lobbying for a Parkinson's nurse and pushing for fitness-and-exercise programs, has also emphasized mental-health and nutrition as crucial components of managing the condition.
