Foundation Reveals 2025 Vital Signs Report: Abundance of Data Hides Deeper Issues

The Burlington Community Foundation recently presented its Vital Statistics Report in a well-attended event held at the Art Gallery. The panel discussion, which included Joann Battaglis of First Ontario Credit Union, Garner Becket with the Conservation Halton Foundation, Christina Mulder (Director of the Burlington Food Bank), and Catherine Villasenor of Home Suite Home, aimed to shed light on the state of the community.

However, the discussion saw a point of contention when the term 'intersectionality' was frequently mentioned, but did not seem to resonate with the speaker. This left some audience members questioning the depth of the conversation.

Despite this, the data presented in the report was solid, showcasing the work done by the Burlington Food Bank. In 2019, the Foodbank served 1985 people, a number that skyrocketed to 3517 in 2022. This growth rate, exceeding 34% annually since 2022, painted a stark picture of the increasing need for food assistance in the community.

The report, unfortunately, was not followed by the presentation of the full report, with only one page of grades being shown. This left many in attendance seeking more information and clarity.

The research for the report was conducted by more than credible individuals, but the range of people interviewed and the number of responders to the survey work were not specified. This lack of transparency raised further questions about the scope of the report.

Moreover, some individuals from various organisations in the room had well-grounded understandings of the issues and challenges the city faces, but did not get much opportunity to speak to the room. This left a sense of unfulfilled potential in the discussion.

The Burlington Community Foundation has yet to announce a specific date for the interviewing or presentation of the full report. As the community awaits further information, they continue to grapple with the questions raised during the panel discussion.

In the midst of these uncertainties, Christina Mulder, Director of the Burlington Food Bank, stood out as the most authentic panelist, offering a grounded perspective on the challenges faced by the Food Bank and the community at large.

Despite the questions that remain, the Burlington Community Foundation's Vital Statistics Report has sparked important conversations and shed light on the state of the community. As the community awaits further information, they continue to engage in dialogue and work towards a better future for all.
