A Late-Night Scoop: The Unsung Heroes of Pediatric Palliative Care

Expanding Pediatric Palliative Care Services Following a Case of the Dedicated Team Caring for a Girl Beyond Regular Hours

In a touching turn of events, a team of pediatric palliative care specialists from Cruces Hospital, Baracaldo (Biscay), revealed they've been extending their working hours to provide home care for terminally ill children, highlighting the glaring shortage of resources in this critical area of care.

Last Monday, the team shared their story on social media, detailing an incident where they used a hospital vehicle outside of working hours to care for a four-year-old girl. On Tuesday, the Health Councilor, Alberto Martínez, announced that authorities will now standardize pediatric palliative care for complex cases after regular hours.

Parents of Ayuri, the little girl who recently passed away, expressed their gratitude to the team but also voiced demands for a system that doesn't put its heroes in such extraordinary circumstances. The healthcare professionals confirm that, without a 24/7 palliative care team, these selfless acts are a necessity.

In the eye of the media storm and public pressure, Basque healthcare has admitted their mistake—a miscommunication about the management of a vehicle outside office hours. Yet Martínez clarified that Osakidetza will expand the hours of palliative care.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Health, Monica García, vowed to promote "all protocols and measures" to ensure a dignified death with professional accompaniment. García was responding to the case of a pediatrician who, according to Echamos de menos, attended to a little girl outside his regular hours.

The tragic reality is that in Spain, around 60,000 children and adolescents require pediatric palliative care, with current resources woefully inadequate to meet this need. Research shows that only three regions have a specific 24/7 pediatric palliative care service continuously.

The health authorities have been urged to act urgently to ensure that all children receive the universal right to quality palliative care. Improved infrastructure and resources, policy reforms, public awareness and education, collaboration, and international partnerships are all key to achieving this goal.

As García emphasized, the healthcare system "not only cures and treats, but also accompanies and supports." To ensure this support reaches even the youngest and most vulnerable, action is imperative.
