European Union Consumer Protection Consultation Regarding Draft Directive
In a recent investigation by Oeko-Test, the popular ice cream brand Cremissimo's Bourbon Vanille flavour has received a grade of "inadequate." The main reason for its poor performance is the presence of questionable ingredients.
The investigation, which evaluated 12 vegan ice cream varieties of different flavours, found that Cremissimo's Bourbon Vanille ice cream contained several substances that raised concerns. These included palm oil or palm oil derivatives, artificial flavoring agents, preservatives or additives with dubious health assessments, and potentially problematic emulsifiers or stabilizers.
Palm oil, often criticized for environmental and sustainability concerns, as well as potential health issues linked to trans fats or saturated fats, was one of the problematic substances identified in Cremissimo's ice cream formulation. Synthetic flavorings and additives, which are sometimes used to prolong shelf life, were another concern. These can raise questions about the use of natural ingredients.
Additionally, the lab found significantly increased levels of saturated mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOSH/MOSH-analogues) in Cremissimo ice cream. Although the consequences of MOSH/MOSH-analogues accumulating in human fat tissue and some organs are still unclear, animal studies have shown that these substances can lead to organ damage.
Despite its poor performance in the Oeko-Test, Cremissimo ice cream received a grade of "very good" in the sensory discipline. Experts described the taste as aromatic, with a distinct vanilla note, sweet, and reminiscent of cream. However, the overall result is based mainly on the ingredients.
Unlike Cremissimo, many cult brands have long disappeared from the shelves. Vegan ice cream varieties are no longer a rarity in frozen food sections, with five of the tested varieties receiving a grade of "very good."
Oeko-Test also criticized three pesticides and carrageenan in the samples of Mövenpick Urban Moments Cherry Brownie, another ice cream variety tested in the investigation. Carrageenan, a thickener, was found in Cremissimo ice cream and is obtained from red algae. In animal studies, negative effects on the digestive tract and immune system have been found with carrageenan.
Despite its use in the food industry, Oeko-Test recommends avoiding the use of carrageenan. The test results for the investigation can be found at this link: https://www.oekotest.de/food/vegan-ice-cream (paid).
In conclusion, while Cremissimo's Bourbon Vanille ice cream may have a creamy, melting consistency and a delicious taste, the overall result is based mainly on the ingredients. Consumers should be cautious when choosing ice cream and consider the potential health and environmental impacts of the ingredients used.
The investigation by Oeko-Test revealed that Cremissimo's Bourbon Vanille ice cream, despite a delightful taste, contains questionable ingredients such as palm oil, artificial flavoring agents, and potential emulsifiers or stabilizers, which raises concerns about health-and-wellness and lifestyle choices. The food-and-drink sector, including ice cream brands, should strive to prioritize natural, sustainable, and healthier alternatives.
