Oberhausen SPD Women’s Association Launches Awareness Campaign Against Violence Towards Women

The Oberhausen Social Democratic Women's Association (AsF) is set to launch an annual awareness campaign against violence towards women on November 26, 2022. The campaign is part of the nationwide International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

Key Activities on November 26, 2022

  1. "Free from Violence" Flag Raising: The campaign will begin with the symbolic raising of the "Free from Violence" flag at the Oberhausen town hall (Rathaus). This act aims to visually show solidarity and raise public awareness about violence against women.
  2. "Violence Doesn’t Come in a Bag" Information Booth: In the city center, the SPD Women's Association will set up an information booth under the slogan “Violence doesn’t come in a bag”. The booth will provide educational materials and engage passersby in conversations about the realities and risks of violence against women.

The booth's goal is to inform people about how violence can be hidden behind everyday facades and stress the importance of vigilance and support for victims. It will also provide information on the topics of "Domestic Violence" and "Stalking".

Raising Awareness and Combating Violence

Ute Jordan-Ecker, the chairwoman of the Oberhausen SPD Women's Association, emphasized that every instance of violence against women is one too many. The association aims to contribute to ensuring that victims of domestic violence feel empowered to seek help.

Jordan-Ecker mentioned that the dark figure of domestic violence is estimated to be much higher due to fear and shame preventing many women from turning to the police. The Oberhausen AsF wants to set a sign for a self-determined life of women with their "Violence doesn't come in a bag" campaign.

The Oberhausen AsF aims to continue the original action of 'TERRE DES FEMMES' and carry it on with the "Violence doesn't come in a bag" campaign. Since 2001, the organization "TERRE DES FEMMES" has been calling annually on November 25 for actions against domestic violence.

The Oberhausen AsF has been annually raising the "Free from Violence" flag at the SPD business office since 2001, as a sign of solidarity for the "International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women". The information booth will raise awareness about the issue of "Violence against Women" under the motto "Violence doesn't come in a bag".

Every third woman in Germany has experienced physical or sexual violence since the age of 15. In cases of rape, sexual harassment, and sexual assault in partnerships, the victims are 98.1% female. The Oberhausen AsF's activities are part of a broader effort to actively involve the community in acknowledging and combating violence against women, demonstrating solidarity with survivors, and promoting prevention and support services.

  1. The "Violence doesn't come in a bag" information booth, a part of the Oberhausen SPD Women's Association's awareness campaign against violence towards women, aims to educate the public about the hidden nature of violence and the importance of support for victims, while also providing information on topics like domestic violence and stalking.
  2. While science and health-and-wellness often focus on physical health, the Oberhausen SPD Women's Association's campaign against violence towards women emphasizes the importance of mental health and wellness for women, as every third woman in Germany has experienced physical or sexual violence since the age of 15, and the majority of cases of rape, sexual harassment, and sexual assault involve female victims.
