Elderly Man of Recorded History Passes Away

Maria Branyas Morera, who was recognised as the world's oldest person and the oldest woman, passed away on August 19, 2023, at the age of 117 years and 168 days. The confirmation of her age and status was made by the Gerontology Research Group and Guinness World Records.

Born on March 4, 1907, in San Francisco, California, Maria Branyas Morera was the third child of Spanish immigrants. Her parents emigrated to the United States a year before her birth. Maria grew up in a loving family of three children.

In 1915, amidst World War I, Maria's family decided to return to Catalonia, where she spent the rest of her life. She married Dr. Joan Morera at the age of 24. The couple had a harmonious marriage that lasted until Dr. Morera's passing in 1976.

Throughout her life, Maria demonstrated remarkable resilience. During the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), she and her husband helped injured soldiers. After the war, Maria continued to assist her husband in his medical practice.

Maria outlived her eldest son, August, who passed away at the age of 86. Her next youngest daughter passed away on August 19, 2022, just a year before Maria herself. Despite these losses, Maria maintained a positive outlook on life.

Maria often stated that longevity also depends on luck and good genetics. However, she also attributed her longevity to "order, calm, good family and friend relationships, contact with nature, emotional stability, no worries or regrets, a lot of positivity, and avoiding toxic people."

Maria Branyas Morera celebrated her 117th birthday with family and friends at the nursing home where she had lived for the past two decades. Besides hearing problems and mobility limitations, Maria had no other health issues, and her mind was perfectly clear.

Maria is survived by two children, 11 grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren. May her legacy inspire us all to live life to the fullest and cherish the moments we share with our loved ones.
