Eilis Frawley's Forward Momentum and Crusade for Inclusion

Hey there, music lover! Meet Eilis Frawley, the embodiment of a percussive powerhouse and a crusader for inclusivity in Berlin's groovy scene. Whether fronting the microphone, smashing the drum kit, or jamming in the studio, Frawley's undeniable flair graces every project she touches.

Upon arriving in the city in 2016, Frawley helped launch the groundbreaking Bang On event series, striving to diversify the local lineups. Ever since, she's forged a core spot in numerous bands, such as Turkish post-punkers Kara Delik, local supergroup I Drew Blank, and noisy punksters Restless. Add to that touring with acts like Laura Lee & the Jettes and Anika, and sandwiching in some solo work, and you'll find she's somehow conquered the art of time management!

Frawley dropped her first EP way back in 2020, and five years later, she's about to unleash her debut album, Fall Forward, an electrifying collection of no-wave, post-poetic-punk anthems. How on earth does she juggle it all?

For Frawley, being progressive means embracing inclusivity and accessibility:

"So you've been silent for five years. What gives? What's it like to finally release your debut album into the world?"

I started working on this album in 2019, battling a creative rut while yearning for touring, songwriting, and music-making to dominate my life. Just as I mapped out ambitious plans, the pandemic struck. Once things began to normalize, I found myself drawn to creating music with others instead of by myself. So, I embarked on touring ventures with Laura Lee, went on tour with Anika, and founded my band, Kara Delik. Amongst this whirlwind, I also wrote my first solo album.

I desired the creative genius of a FLINTA (Female, Lesbian, Intersex, Nonbinary, Transgender, and Asexual) producer, so I sought out Kat Frankie, who was warmly recommended. Our collaboration was serendipitous: an email, a coffee, and a resounding "yes." I still can't believe it! Kat's talent and creativity remain awe-inspiring. The entire project transcended just me; Kat played a vital role in it.

"Let's dive into the opening track. It tags directly into the album's primary theme: representation and expectations of women and those who identify as female. Spill the beans on that and other layers you've unearthed on the LP."

Fall Forward mirrors my worldview, tackling topics like mental health, life as an expat, social structures, relationships between people, and my connection with society. The album's opening track, 'Be A Lady,' is a casual take on outdated and sexist language. The shocking frequency with which I'm addressed by my gender in everyday conversations is alarming.

Much of the lyrics were written during the pandemic, as we grappled with the inability to visit loved ones. 'James,' for instance, is a mourning song, dedicated to a dear friend who passed prematurely in my 20s. 'Waters' paints a vivid picture of my Nanna, a gossip-loving matriarch. On the contrary, 'Something to do' is a tune for my niece and nephews.

"With your finger on the pulse of diversity in the industry, what are your thoughts on the current state of affairs?"

The increased representation of FLINTA and BIPoC artists, thanks to initiatives such as Decolonoize, Iç Ic̈e, My People, and Brighter Agency, has been encouraging. The DIY scene appears more inclusive, but there's still work to be done. Major stages, big shows, mainstream festivals, and the music press continue to be dominated by white cis-men. It's crucial to hold venues, promoters, and headlining acts accountable for booking diverse bands.

Berlin still has a long road ahead in promoting inclusivity, and curbing the tradition of smoking indoors during concerts would be a significant step forward.

"Bang On was your brainchild. Let's explore how the event series came to be."

Bang On began in 2016 when I moved to Berlin from South Korea. I was distressed by the harsh reality of carrying your own backline for gigs, as well as other hurdles in the music industry. The gender balance in live music was disconcertingly skewed compared to my experiences in South Korea. We desperately needed more community spaces for emerging artists.

"Speaking of other projects, are there any you haven't mentioned that we should know about or are there exciting new ventures on the horizon?"

I have two other ventures in the works: Kara Delik, a Turkish post-punk band with an upcoming album in April and a string of tour dates in April and May, and Restless, a noisy punk band with whom we've had a wild first year and are currently composing new tunes. This is my daily grind. Despite the constant stream of emails and decisions, I wouldn't trade it for anything. Juggling three bands, releases, tours, and minimizing the snooze button to seven hours a night—it's a thrilling challenge!

"Setting aside the drum kit and stepping into the spotlight—how does that feel?"

It feels both natural and nerve-wracking. There are more responsibilities, more audience engagement needed, and a heightened demand for presence. But I appreciate the challenge, and completing this record feels both rewarding and cool. I'm proud that I remembered all the parts and did what was required.
