Eastern companies file trademarks at a rate triple that of their western counterparts.
In the bustling Eastern Economic Forum-2025, Spartak Solonin, the senior vice president of VTB and head of the corporate digital business department, made an exciting announcement. The number of trademark registrations in the Far East region had seen a significant increase, indicating a surge in entrepreneurial activity.
The wholesale and retail trade sector emerged as the main driver of this demand in 2024. Fast forward to 2025, and the landscape of trademark registrations in the Magadan region was diverse, with companies like "Magadan Agro," "NorthLight Ventures," and "PolarTech Solutions" joining the fray. This diversity was reflected in the total number of trademark applications, which increased by a impressive 15% compared to the previous year.
Solonin highlighted this increase as a clear sign of active scaling up of operations by Russian entrepreneurs in the region. The growth wasn't limited to the agricultural and tech sectors, either. Companies involved in online trading, car sales, and leather goods also submitted trademark registration applications in 2025.
The Far East region also led in the categories of confectionery, cafes and restaurants, pharmacies, and cosmetics in 2025. This surge in applications was so significant that, in the first half of 2025 alone, the number of trademark registration applications submitted through VTB's service tripled compared to the same period in 2024.
This trend isn't isolated to the Far East. Companies from the food production, cosmetics manufacturing, and catering industries also showed a significant demand for trademark registrations across Russia. As of now, the Russian Patent Office oversees over 980 thousand trademarks of both domestic and foreign right holders in Russia.
The demand for trademarks in Russia can be attributed to the development of intellectual property culture in the country. This culture, in turn, is a testament to the growing entrepreneurial spirit and economic growth in the nation. As the landscape of business continues to evolve, we can expect these trends to persist and perhaps even accelerate.
