Düsseldorf announces prolonged closure of Nordstraße station till year-end for asbestos abatement procedures

The Nordstraße U-Bahn station in Düsseldorf, Germany, is currently undergoing a significant renovation project aimed at modernizing the station and improving safety. This project includes the removal of hazardous asbestos materials and upgrading fire safety systems to meet current standards.

The renovation works, which began on May 21st, were prompted by the discovery of asbestos fibers during preparatory work for the fire protection renovation. Since then, the station has been closed, and passengers are asked to use the neighbouring stations "Heinrich-Heine-Allee" and "ERGO-Platz/Klever Straße" instead.

The asbestos removal is being carried out by a certified specialist company and is expected to continue until the end of 2025. It is important to note that no asbestos fibers were detected in the air quality measurements or dust contact samples before the ceiling was dismantled.

Once the asbestos removal is complete, the fire protection modernization will begin in the U-Bahnhof Nordstraße. The station will receive a smoke-permeable metal grid ceiling on the platform level and in parts of the distribution level, non-flammable floor coverings on the platform and in the distribution levels, surveillance cameras, additional loudspeakers, and a new fire alarm system.

To prevent the uncontrolled release of asbestos fibers, locks are being used at the station. The tram lines 701 and 705 are not affected by the restriction of U-Bahn lines U78 and U79. Trains are passing through the station without stopping.

The city, Rheinbahn, and regional government have developed a remediation concept for the removal of asbestos, which is being implemented under strict safety and environmental regulations. An external expert office is accompanying and monitoring the measures at the Nordstraße station.

For the most precise and current status, including detailed schedules and any impact on train services, it is best to consult official updates from Rheinbahn, the Düsseldorf city transportation authority, or recent local government announcements. These sources provide the latest timelines, safety information, and expected completion dates for the renovation work at Nordstraße station.

The asbestos fibers discovered at the Nordstraße station originated from a lighting cover dismantled in the 1990s. Passengers are encouraged to stay informed and follow the updates provided by the authorities to ensure a smooth journey during this renovation period.

The renovation project at Nordstraße U-Bahn station encompasses not only modernization and safety improvements but also environmental science, as the removal of asbestos fibers is being conducted. The health-and-wellness of passengers is also a priority, with therapies-and-treatments such as a smoke-permeable metal grid ceiling and non-flammable floor coverings being installed post-asbestos removal.
