India's Foreign Minister Highlights Key Issues at ASEAN Meetings
In a series of meetings held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on July 10-11, 2025, Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita led India's delegation at the ASEAN-India Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AIFMM), the 15th East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers' Meeting (EAS FMM), and the 32nd ASEAN Regional Forum.
During the AIFMM, Minister Margherita extended India's continued support to Malaysia's chairmanship of ASEAN and reiterated India's commitment to ASEAN unity and centrality. He also emphasized the need for the early completion of the review of the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA).
At the 15th EAS FMM, Minister Margherita underlined India's contribution towards strengthening the Leaders-led EAS platform. He also exchanged views on current regional and international developments. Notably, the EAS mechanism completed 20 years at this meeting.
In a separate statement, Minister Margherita underlined development partnerships in digital, maritime, health, and innovation. He had previously made a similar statement during his visit to Malaysia on July 14.
The Minister also shared initiatives taken this year under the India-ASEAN Year of Tourism. He did not repeat the need for the early completion of the review of AITIGA at the EAS FMM, but emphasized it again in a separate statement.
In a post on his Twitter account, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar expressed his appreciation for the progress of the India-Malaysia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. He also wished the Malaysian counterpart on the occasion of Malaysia's 68th Independence Day.
It is worth noting that countries that intensified their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and were represented by India's Minister for Foreign Affairs at a conference in Malaysia have not been explicitly named in the available search results.
The 10 Point proposal, announced at the 21st ASEAN-India Summit in Lao PDR in 2024, aims to further strengthen the ASEAN-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Minister Margherita appreciated the progress in the implementation of this proposal.
Jaishankar, in a separate post, valued the progress of the India-Malaysia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
These meetings mark a significant step forward in strengthening the ties between India and the ASEAN nations, with both parties expressing their commitment to continued cooperation and collaboration in various sectors.
