Deadly Fire at Jaipur Hospital Claims Six Lives, Sparks Inquiry

A devastating fire at Jaipur's Sawai Man Singh Hospital's trauma centre has claimed six lives and injured several others. The fire, which broke out in the neuro ICU on the second floor, has led to the suspension of key hospital officials and a government inquiry.

Dr Anurag Dhakad, the trauma centre in-charge, had repeatedly raised concerns about electrical and safety hazards in written letters, but no concrete action was taken. The fire started in the neuro ICU and spread rapidly, leading to the evacuation of fourteen patients from another ICU on the same floor. Tragically, two of these patients later succumbed to their injuries. Relatives of the victims allege that hospital staff fled instead of attempting to rescue patients during the fire.

The state government has ordered an inquiry into the cause of the fire and potential ignored warnings. Legal proceedings have been initiated against the fire safety firm whose tender was cancelled. The government has also announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each for the families of the victims.

Following the fire, Dr Sushil Bhati, the superintendent, Dr Anurag Dhakad, and executive engineer Mukesh Singhal were removed or suspended from their posts. The hospital administration maintains that six deaths were directly due to the fire. The incident has raised serious questions about hospital safety and the response to emergencies.
