Man from Syracuse Faces Prison Time for Attempted Sexual Act with a Minor

Junayd Abdulkhafid, a 43-year-old man from Syracuse, has been found guilty in Cayuga County Court of attempted criminal sexual act in the second degree. The conviction, announced on September 12, 2024, carries a potential prison term of up to four years, with an additional 10 years of post-release supervision.

The case against Abdulkhafid stemmed from a law enforcement sting, which was part of a multi-agency investigation targeting adults arranging online to have sex with children. The investigation involved the Cayuga County Sheriff's Office, Auburn Police, New York State Police, the FBI, and the District Attorney's Office.

According to the court documents, Abdulkhafid was arrested in Auburn on August 8, 2024, after traveling to meet someone he believed was a minor. The meeting was intended for the purpose of committing a criminal sexual act.

Superintendent Mark Horner, who headed the police unit involved in the investigation, stated, "This conviction sends a clear message that our community will not tolerate adults seeking to exploit children online."

Abdulkhafid's sentencing is scheduled for December 18. It is hoped that this conviction will serve as a deterrent to others who may consider engaging in such harmful and illegal activities.
