Finance Minister Klingbeil Announces Support for Ailing Health & Care Insurance
Committing funds for healthcare insurance boost announced by Klingbeil
In a bid to stabilize the struggling health and care insurance systems, Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil promises a financial boost from the federal budget. Despite this support, he emphasizes that the issues cannot be permanently fixed with increased tax money.
"We understand the hardships in the health and care insurance sector," Klingbeil stated, speaking to the German Press Agency (dpa). "But they can't be continuously patched up with more tax dollars," he cautioned.
Health Minister's Plea for Funding
Federal Health Minister Nina Warken previously called for billions in federal funding to improve the financial health of both insurance systems and curb further contribution rate increases. Both insurance branches are in the red.
Warken argued that the federal government, in part responsible for the multi-billion-euro deficits in both health and care insurance, should shoulder part of the responsibility. She pointed to uncollected contributions for benefit recipients and non-insurance-related services from the coronavirus period, estimating a ten-billion-euro deficit for benefit recipients and nearly six billion euros in federal coronavirus debts.
However, Klingbeil did not directly address this argument and declined to reveal the size of the promised federal subsidy to dpa.
The SPD's Perspective
Klingbeil underscored the importance of strong social security systems for hardworking people, calling for more creative solutions than just increasing work hours or trimming healthcare system services. He also defended the proposal from his labor minister, Barbara Bas, to include civil servants in the statutory pension insurance. "I think we can have a debate about who pays into the pension fund and how much," Klingbeil stated.
