Charity obtains authorization for immediate deployment of temporary sleeping quarters
In a significant step towards supporting the homeless community, the Vale Douzaine will be hosting two emergency sleeping pods next month. The modular village plans, announced by Graham Merfield, Chair of Caritas, mark the beginning of longer-term efforts to provide immediate shelter for those in urgent need.
The sleeping pods, ordered from Amazing Grace Spaces, are designed to be 8ft by 6ft and of "acceptable design and appearance" according to planning. They have been approved by the Planning authorities, who have also stated that the pods will have no effect on parking or neighboring properties.
The planning permission allows the pods to remain in the Douzaine car park for an initial two-year period. However, it is important to note that these pods are considered emergency, non-permanent accommodation only. No user can occupy a pod for more than seven consecutive days, and no one person can live in a pod at the site for more than 30 nights per year.
Caritas would like to express their gratitude to the Vale Douzaine and architect StudiO for their assistance with the plans. The organisation is also seeking volunteers and community partners to help maintain and manage the sleeping pods. The modular village, according to Merfield, is a step towards creating a community of modular homes for stability and hope. While the sleeping pods are not a final solution, they provide immediate shelter for those in urgent need.
Environmental Health and Pollution Regulation has no concerns over drainage for the temporary scheme. The plans for a modular village are part of wider plans by Caritas to build a modular village to support the homeless, which Merfield believes will make a significant difference in the lives of many.
