Kansas Men's Basketball Coach Bill Self Undergoes Second Heart Procedure in Three Years

Bill Self, the head coach of the Kansas men's basketball team, has faced a series of health challenges in recent years. In July 2025, he was hospitalized at Lawrence Memorial Hospital due to concerning symptoms, leading to a heart procedure involving the insertion of two more stents.

This incident marks the second time in just over two years that Self has required heart procedures. Back in 2023, he missed the Big 12 tournament due to a heart problem that required an emergency room visit. Despite these health setbacks, Self continues as Kansas' head coach, having signed an amended five-year contract in 2023 that made him the highest-paid coach in college basketball and essentially set up a lifetime deal.

The 2024-25 season was disappointing for both Self and the Kansas men's basketball team. They were eliminated in the first round of March Madness by Arkansas. After reaching the quarterfinals of the conference tournament, Kansas earned a 7-seed in March Madness.

The procedure on Self's heart was successful, according to a statement from Kansas. He is expected to make a full recovery and is in good spirits despite being hospitalized. Self expressed gratitude for his medical care and stated that he feels strong and is focused on preparing for the upcoming basketball season.

It's worth noting that Self is the coach of the team that has won two national championships. At 62 years old, he will aim to rebound from a disappointing 2024-25 season. The Kansas men's basketball team will undoubtedly look to him for leadership and guidance as they strive for success in the upcoming season.
